Gotta Try It!: The Best Meal Delivery Kit in Toronto

My husband and I really enjoy having meal kits delivered to us once a week. We love the way that it simplifies our lives and we always highly recommend them to anyone. Having meal kits delivered is a win-win on all levels; you don't have to figure out what to make for dinner or waste time trying to think of something "different" to cook. You don't have to go grocery shopping and end up buying more ingredients than what you actually require. And the best part is that by using a meal kit delivery, you'll end up preparing and eating all sorts of unique and interesting meals that you never would have thought to make on your own. My family is sold. When we lived in Vancouver we used Fresh Prep and were incredibly happy with their service. I especially loved their wide variety of ethnic meals and they would often collaborate with local restaurants to create specially inspired recipes. Some weeks there would even be little "bonus" inclusions as treats. When there were holidays they would always offer a meal themed appropriately for the occasion. There was a lot of thought and heart involved. They were great. Upon moving to Toronto, our search began to find a new meal service. There are quite a few available in a city of this size so we decided to try them all! Five different companies, to be exact! We tried each one for two weeks each (three meals per week) and tried to get a good feel for what they each had to offer. Here is what we found: Meal Delivery Kit #1: Goodfood

Price: +/-$66 per week (for three meals) (Based in Quebec but available Canada-wide) What I liked: Decently good quality meals. What I didn't like: Feels very corporate. Meals were fairly generic and unmemorable. Complicated recipes. Not a local company. Meal Delivery Kit #2: Fresh City Farms

Price: +/-$68 per week (for three meals) (Based locally in Toronto) What I liked: This is the service that I wanted to like the most. Their entire vibe and organic sensibility suits me the most by far. I love how local they are. What I didn't like: Sadly, the recipes weren't very good and neither was their selection. They usually took a very long time to prepare and the meals weren't exciting. Their website is confusing. Meal Delivery Kit #3: Chefs Plate

Price: +/-$65 per week (for three meals) (Based locally in Toronto but available Canada-wide) What I liked: Meals were decently interesting and tasted good. Easy website to use. What I didn't like: Feels very corporate. Meals weren't memorable enough. Portions seemed a bit small. Meal Delivery Kit #4: Prepd

Price: $60 per week (for three meals) (Based locally in Toronto) What I liked: Interesting and flavourful meals with a nice local vibe. This one reminded me the most of Fresh Prep in Vancouver. What I didn't like: Still feels a little corporate. Meal Delivery Kit #5: HelloFresh

Price: $80 per week (for three meals) (Based in Germany and available internationally) What I liked: This was easily the most delicious food! I loved the meals and I loved that some of the ingredients seemed higher-end. The recipes were easy as well. What I didn't like: By far the most expensive! Feels very corporate, plus is extremely not local. THE WINNER... We're going to continue our membership with PREPD! Prepd seems like the best overall balance between good food, quick and easy recipes, and a reasonable price. If you're interested in giving meal kit deliveries a try... YOU SHOULD! Most companies offer great introductory deals and none of them force you into anything. Try them all and find out which one is right for you!
