It's Wild BC Spot Prawn Season!

Living on the coast in British Columbia means that we get a lot of incredible wild, locally caught seafood. BC Spot Prawns are a type of shrimp that are caught wild in the waters between Vancouver Island and the mainland. (So they're like, super local. They're all named Colin.) The shrimp are carefully and sustainably managed and are caught using a method that has minimal impact on ocean habitat and very low levels of bycatch of other species. Their season only lasts a short time; for about 6-8 weeks in May and June. So you've gotta get them while you can! They're large, juicy, sweet and delicious. The best part is that when you get them live, they are just so incredibly fresh and taste like the sea. The best news? You can get them in Vancouver right NOW!!!

Head to the Granville Island Public Market, seven days a week from 9am-7pm and find a vendor called Seafood City. They will hook you up!

They are currently being sold for $28.90 per pound. (I bought eight shrimp and paid $20.95 for them.) I picked them up this morning and my husband prepared one of our favourite dishes; nasi goreng. It's a dish from Indonesia that literally translates to "fried rice." Other ingredients include; fried egg, crispy shallots, tomato, cucumber, lettuce, krupuk (prawn crackers) and sambal oelek. Using the fresh BC spot prawns elevated this dish to the next level!

Get them while you can and enjoy this beautiful British Columbian delicacy!
